Skimming (Payment Card Skimming, Credit Card Skimming) is a term for an attack on the ATM aimed at undue read the information listed on the payment card using a special device. The perpetrator subsequently exploits this information to his advantage.
Skimming in practice: The perpetrator installs the additional device on the ATM through which he can read the payment card information (on the chip or magnetic strip). Then he copies the data to his own card and uses it to withdraw cash or to pay at a retailer. Defense against skimming involves caution to check whether a foreign device isn’t apparently mounted on the ATM, and selection of ATMs that are monitored.
