SCM (Supply Chain Management) is a management field that includes all communication processes with suppliers throughout the supply chain. SCM also includes the concatenation (linking), harmonization and management of a company’s sypply chains. SCM usually refers to the manufacturing sector for the management of suppliers of raw materials or other sub-deliveries (products). SCM encompasses the following processes and areas:
- Planning, sales forecasting
- Logistics, transport and distribution
- Storage
- Production
SCM as a management area is closely linked to ICT, as its many advanced analysis functions and other needs require the support of sophisticated systems and applications. The applied system usually involves a suite of applications that allows for the interconnection of individual supply chains (supplier - manufacturer - distributor - retailer - customer). It therefore significantly improves the organisation’s ability to respond to customer demands by, for example, shortening delivery.
SCM in terms of ICT is part of the company’s information system and has a strong connection to the ERP. The choice of a system depends on the size, complexity and the specific needs of the organization.
