Open Space is an informal term for a type of work area (mostly office), which is not divided into small rooms - offices. It is a large room, where the staff share one big space together.
Open Space in practice: Open space is suitable only for a certain type of organization and work. Its advantage is the improvement of direct communication and cooperation between workers, which may improve the conditions for innovation and teamwork. Optimal use of the open space is in the so-called coworking. Lower operating costs compared with separated offices are also an advantage.
The disadvantage of the open space is the loss of privacy, less peace to work and to some workers greater psychological burden, which may lead to the open space syndrome. Appropriateness of open space must be assessed depending on the type and nature of work and culture in the organization.
