Knowledge sector is known in terms of the national economy as a quaternary sector of the economy. It is based on knowledge and it includes in particular research & development (R&D).

Sometimes, the knowledge sector indicates a broader conception, including all services based on knowledge and information, i.e. education, information and communication technologies, consulting and more.

Quaternary sector is based on high education and requires highly skilled workers. Knowledge sector is growing especially in the advanced countries and it is the driving force for innovation in other sectors, especially in industry and services.
Knowledge sector brings new markets, creates new industries, produces innovative services, products or methods of work. It is therefore crucial for the development of national economy and society.
