Java is one of the most widely used programming languages. It is an object-oriented language based on C++. It is portable, thus resulting programs can run on many platforms, such as UNIX, Windows, DOS, Mac, BeOS, and others.
Java was developed by Sun Microsystems. It was introduced in 1995. Since 2007 it is being developed as open source.
Use of Java in practice: Java is intended primarily for web applications development. It is suitable for all types of client applications (server-based applications including web applications), while not suitable for system programming. Different variants of the Java programming language are covered under the Java platform.
