What is HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study)
Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) is one of the simplest and most widely used approaches to identify risks. HAZOP method is based on the evaluation of probability of exposure and the associated risks.

Hazard and Operability Study, usually the abbreviation HAZOP is used. It is one of the simplest and most widely used approaches to identify risks. HAZOP method is based on the evaluation of probability of exposure and the associated risks. Its main objective is identification of scenarios of potential risks - it allows to identify hazardous conditions that may occur on the examined equipment. Method searches the critical points and then evaluates the potential risks and dangerous conditions. It is a multi-branch team of experts method, where team members are looking for a scenarios at a joint meeting using methods such as brainstorming. The results are formulated in the final recommendation, which aims to improve the process or system.

Steps of HAZOP:

  • Identification of causes
  • Estimation of potential consequences and risks
  • Draft measures to eliminate risks
  • Valuation

The method was developed by ICI (ICI Petrochemical Division) to systematic detailed safety analysis of complex technical equipment.

Use of the HAZOP in practice: HAZOP method is mainly used in the chemical industry. It is a very flexible method, which is used for large technological systems, but it can be used also for small devices. It is a method suitable for large and small organizations.
