Geodatabase is a term that refers to a database storing spatial data.

Spatial data is in spatial base of data expressed as:

  • Points - a point is defined by coordinates in geographical or map system, alternatively by altitude
  • Line - line is created from a set of points (see points)
  • Polygon - polygon is created as a closed set of points (see points)

Points are being represented by objects, which are due to a given scale of stored spatial data in fact one-dimensional - e.g. observation towers.

By the lines are depicted objects, which have in a given scale character of the “lines” - e.g. rivers and communications.

Using polygons are represented objects that have a real character - such as forests, settlements, etc.

The choice of presentation of the object, in principle depends on the selected scale. The observation tower, visualized at a small scale (e.g. 1: 100 000) as a point, will be displayed at a large scale (e.g. 1: 1 000) by polygon as a building.
