Freelancer is a designation for an independent professional who is available for hire by enterprises on a project basis. Sometimes, the terms freelance worker or Independent Contractor are used. Freelance workers in the labor market either act alone or under the heading of the personal agency.

Freelancers work in many fields such as consulting, information and communication technologies, project management, translation, media and promotion, music, journalism, publishing, screenwriting, film making, acting, photojournalism, cosmetics, fragrances, editing, event planning, event management, copy editing, proofreading, indexing, copywriting, computer programming, web design, graphic design, website development, tour guiding, video editing and video production.

Use of the Freelancer in practice: Typical professions for which organizations use freelancers are those that require high specialization, while the organization does not need them in long term (i.e. crash job, such as translation activities or enterprise information system implementation) or a professions, where the legislation of given state allows it and this contractual relationship is better than the employment.

A freelancer is often a person who wants to maintain his independence and does not want to enter into employment.
