Firewall is a software (sometimes on a separate device) that separates and filters traffic between two networks (usually between corporate networks and the Internet), and transmits the data according to certain pre-defined rules. The purpose of a firewall is to prevent the corporate network or individual devices from unauthorized intrusions. It filters out dangerous services, blocks enemy monitoring of the network and prevents sending data without the knowledge of user.
What is firewall for?
Firewall can be installed either on the terminal device (e.g. PC, mobile device) or under any of the active network elements and network infrastructure. So it can protect individual devices or entire corporate network. In practice, it is usually used in a combination of both methods of protection. Firewall is also combined with other security software such as antivirus software, antispyware, and more.
Using firewall in an organization is usually given to each organization’s security policy.
