Computer network is a combination of two or more devices (computers), so that they could communicate with each other. Computer network can be realized using wires (e.g. cable, telephone line, optical fiber) wirelessly (e.g. Wi-Fi) or combinations thereof. Computer network consists of a number of network elements that ensure and implement communication and data exchange between connected devices. In principle, there are distinguished the corporate computer network known as LAN, and the global computer network, known as WAN.
Use of computer network in practice: A computer network allows connected devices and hence users. Therefore, if there is more computer networks in the organization, it is convenient to connect them to the corporate computer network, which allows:
- Sharing and use of various devices (such as printers, servers)
- Sharing data and software - data sharing through the network is one of the key benefits
- Communication and exchange of data messages
Establishment and operation of corporate computer network provides the organization itself. The Internet access is usually provided by internet providers. Nowadays, most computers and similar devices are able to connect to different types of computer networks.
In technical terms, a computer network consists of active and passive elements and the traffic on it is being implemented in several layers (see OSI model). From a technical point of view, it is also important the network architecture, network topology and chosen computer network technology.
IT Manager (CIO) is usually responsible for the operation of computer network and connection to the Internet.
