College is an educational institution that provides higher (tertiary) education in different subjects and fields. College is the highest level of schooling and has the right to award academic degrees. University-type colleges have beyond the education also scientific, research and creative activities. In most countries these types of colleges are called universities. Common college is focused only on teaching and learning. Colleges typically provide two levels of tertiary education:
- First stage of tertiary education (ISCED 5)
- Second stage of tertiary education (ISCED 6) not all colleges may teach graduate studies.
The college statute is usually given by state legislation. Colleges can be private and state (part of the public sector).
Tertiary education in practice: Organizations require for selected jobs and professions achieving first or second stage of tertiary education as part of the qualification requirements of the applicant.
