If Outlook is having difficulty opening or if there are items missing in your mailbox, you can use these steps to troubleshoot data files.
In Windows 10, if you use Outlook 2019, 2016, or earlier, the application saves a copy of your email, contacts, and calendar to two different data files, depending on the type of logged-in account.
If you use an IMAP or POP account, such as the one provided by your ISP, your account information is stored in an Outlook Data File (PST). However, if you use an Office 365, Exchange, or Outlook.com account, the data is stored in the Outlook offline (OST) data file.
From the beginning, go to the “Start” menu and enter “Regedit” in the search field. Then press “Enter” to open the registry editor. In the Control Account dialog box, select Yes. Then, in the registry editor window, you should find the following keys in order:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Current Version \ Browse \ User Shell folder
After selecting the “User Shell Folders” button, go to the right area. You can find the value “Cache”.
Disable Simplified Account Creation.
If you try to add your account using the Connect Outlook to Office 365 wizard in Outlook 2016, this may be a problem. The process of creating an account using the Connect Outlook wizard in Office 365 is called simplified account creation. If you disable this simplified account creation, it is replaced by the regular account creation wizard, which can resolve the issue. We can easily disable the creation of the simplified account using the registry editor. To do this, proceed as follows
- Hold down the Windows key and press R
- Enter Regedit and press Enter.
- Use the left navigation area to navigate the following path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Microsoft \ Office \ 16.0 \ Outlook \ setup \ SOFTWARE
- Locate and click Configuration in the left pane.
- Right-click an empty space in the right pane, select New and then select DWORD (bit 32).
