Shortcuts List to access Excel in an effective way
Although there are many Shortcuts given, we are presenting here the 3 main community favorite shortcut, which is regularly sought for and will indeed be of great favor to you. These are useful in tackling everyday tasks.
1. Ctrl+~ to Show/Hide Formulas
When one presses Ctrl+~ (tilde or backquote), the Show Formulas mode is fixed. One can also get to this view from the Formulas tab > Show Formulas button in the Ribbon. If you select a cell, it will then also display the colored bounding boxes around cells & ranges that are referenced in the formula. This is the same way as if one is about to edit the formula.
In the course of this, one will notice in this mode; the column widths generally get wider to fit the formulas. But, in fact, the widths of the columns do not actually change, but the view makes them appear twice as wide. When one turns off the Show Formulas, the columns will change back and return to their original size.
It is important to note that the Show Formulas view provides you to quickly see which cells possess or contain formulas. It also enables you to compare formulas between cells to see if there is any disagreement. In case any disagreement arises, you can fix it accordingly without wasting much time.
2. Shift+F8 to Select Multiple Areas
Pressing Shift+F8 will hang on the Selection mode on of the Add or Remove. This will enable you to select multiple cells and ranges that are not adjacent. The next step is to click each cell or range that you want to add to the selection.
This is identical with the holding of the Ctrl key while selecting cells or ranges with the mouse. The benefit is that one can perform the selections with one hand. One can also use the arrow keys and Shift on the keyboard to add to the selection. One can press the Escape key to turn the Add or Remove Selection mode off or press Ctrl+F8 again.
One thing to be noted here is, there might be a little difference while one uses a Mac or Windows laptop keyboard. So, one might need to press Fn+Shift+F8 if you are using a Mac or Windows laptop keyboard.
3. Shift+F2 to Add a New Note
Cell notes and comments will aid us in adding additional information or context about a particular cell. However, one may face a puzzle with notes and comments. In case one is using Microsoft/Office 365, then the cell Comments have been renamed to Notes. On the other hand, the recent versions of Microsoft Excel Training have a new Comment feature that enables one to have threaded conversations for a cell.
If one is still using an older version of Excel, then they are still called Comments. Pressing Shift+F2 inserts Notes for Comments on older versions of Excel. Pressing Ctrl+Shift+F2 inserts Comments for Microsoft 365. Again, there is a slight deviation for one using a Mac or Windows laptop.
One thing to be noted is one might need to hold the Fn key in combination with these shortcuts if you are using a Mac or Windows laptop.
