Assessment Centre (AC) is a method of selection, complex evaluation and comparison of the personal and professional qualities of job applicants or employees in the organization. Assessment Centre method is usually done in a group of 5 to 8 people and the evaluation period is from 2 hours to 2 days. The Assessment Centre is based on psychodiagnostic tests, simulating desirable and typical work activities, within individual and group tasks. Assessment Centre can, of its nature, compare the performance and behavior of more people who are in one place and simultaneously performing the same tasks.
Assessment Centre is much more demanding than a normal job interview. Participants are deliberately exposed to pressure, stress, and challenges and their performances are carefully monitored and evaluated by a team of expert evaluators (personnel manager, recruiter, corporate psychologist, executive, or an external psychologist or consultant of the staffing agency).
The Assessment Centre schedule is designed on the basis of requirements for the profession, profile and job specifications. For management occupations, the program is focused more on the managerial skills and it is different than for business or other professions. It is always focused on a combination of performance, personality, social and managerial qualities. It is usually tests:
- Skills in organizing
- Ability to plan
- Ability to solve problems
- Analytical skills
- Decision making skills
- Leadership skills
- Creativity
- Resistance to stress
- Social communication skills
- Argumentation skills
- Social behavior
- Motivational characteristics and ability to motivate
- Will
Use of the Assessment Centre in practice: AC is used as an effective method of selecting employees for managerial, commercial and other demanding professions. Assessment Centre enables a comprehensive and objective comparison of candidates. Assessment Centre is very popular for its thoroughness and comprehensiveness, and its results serve relatively accurate prediction of the future job performance of the candidate.
